A goddess in the making... or a demon reborn?
In the remote mountain village where she was born, Mariarta dil Alicg lives the untroubled life of a peasant girl...until, soon after a mysterious stranger's arrival, she starts to hear voices in the wind. The voices whisper strange secrets in Mariarta’s ears -- promising her the power to command the stormwind, hinting at an unknown, magical heritage, and prophesying a fate marvelous past all Mariarta’s imaginings.
Then a curse falls on Mariarta's village, shattering the lives of her family and friends. Mariarta must journey across the mountain realm of Raetia in search of a way to break the curse -- while also hunting for the truth about the beautiful and terrible being who she discovers is trying to possess her soul.
Mariarta’s search will lead her into hidden domains of sorcery both dreadful and wondrous, and will finally embroil the young woman in the growing rebellion against her land's cruel Austriac oppressors. But not before Mariarta comes face to face at last with the immortal Lady of the Storms, and challenges her to one final battle for control of her life, her soul, and her destiny...

She's wonderful, what can I say? Duane imparts the same sense of wonder and surprise into this adult fantasy that she does with all her works. Based on Swiss myths (sorry) and fairy tales, like William Tell and the apple, she weaves a delicious yarn. Bring on books 2 and 3!Product details

A Wind From The South Raetian Tales Volume 1 Diane Duane 9781540847836 Books Reviews
I really wish there were more of these, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Please write more, Diane. Pllllllllllleeeeeeeeease.
I'm a long-time fan of Diane Duane's, so while my enjoyment of a new book of hers isn't that much of a surprise, ) this was a still a novel treat. (No pun intended, honest.) I don't think I'd read high fantasy based on eastern europe before -- most high fantasy seems to be set in the UK if not Ireland specifically.
Like Duane's previous work, this is well written, well-characterized, and does really interesting things with quasi-deity characters. Unlike her previous work, this book felt a little more... grownup. I hesitate to say "more real" about a fantasy novel, but maybe more grounded? The characters seemed a little less naive and everything seemed a little less clearcut than you might expect if you only know her from the Young Wizards series or her Star Trek novels. (A little more like her Door into Fire series, but still a pretty clear maturation even from that.)
And I'm *seriously* looking forward to the sequel. )
Do not buy this in paperback. It is missing 1/2 the book. I only got 238 pages of a 424 paged book. It just stops in the middle of a sentence on the last page. Can not comment on the quality of the writing as I have not been able to read the whole novel.
Where is the rest of the book. I'm not the only one in comments complain about the book stopping mid-sentence on page 238g. Don't you read these comments.
You probably owe many more people other than myself an apology and a Full copy of the book.
I've just emailed DD about this problem and she will look into it.
